Personal and professional papers, correspondence, speeches, photographs, and records of medical practice and military service, 1892-1989, of Philadelphia, Pa., cardiologist and educator, Francis C. Wood. Includes records of chairmanship of University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and presidency of College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Series 1 documents Francis C. Wood's family and personal life, education, and honors and awards, 1892-1989. Includes family correspondence and diaries and correspondence, speech notes, photographic prints, and related award materials. General correspondence in Series 2 includes letters of physicians, non-physicians, and letters of recommendation, 1916-1988. Wood's cardiological and electocardiographical research, 1932-[1937?], is documented in Series 3 with holographs and typescripts of articles and supporting material; occasional raw data and patient case histories included. Series 4 describes Wood's military service in World War II with later related materials, 1940-1984. Series includes letters, 1942-1945, from Wood to his wife; reserve and veteran papers; annual reports, correspondence, and other administrative records of U.S. Army 20th General Hospital; typescripts of published articles based on hospital research, particularly on malaria; medical reference files; and hospital histories with admission statistics and occasional patient case histories. Wood's teaching career is documented in Series 5, 1935-1988; series includes lecture notes, course materials, student evaluations, and commencement addresses. Bulk of material concerns University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Series 6 contains administrative records of Wood's chairmanship of University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, 1931-1985. Includes files of departmental reports, correspondence, and memoranda, 1947-1965, used in compiling annual reports. Series also includes financial records; documents of University functions and events; and personnel information and job applications. Wood's association with and presidency of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia is documented in Series 7, 1931-1988. Series includes minutes of Council, administrative files, annual addresses, records of College functions, and material concerning formation of and research fellowship applications for College's Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine. Series 8 contains materials of alumni associations of Princeton University and University of Pennsylvania and other organizations with which Wood was associated, 1942-1988. Series includes records of a financial assistance organization, the Twenty-two Foundation, established by Princeton's Class of 1922. Occasional patient case history files, 1931-1982, from Wood's medical practice are preserved in Series 9. Documentation of Wood's speeches, 1926-1989, in Series 10, includes holographs, typescripts, and supporting material; speeches arranged by title. Many concern humanism in medicine and unorthodox medical remedies and treatments. Series 11 contains publications, 1911-1988, by Wood and other physicians; correspondence and related materials included. Photographic prints and albums, 1893-[1980?], of Wood, his family, colleagues, and 20th General Hospital in World War II are in Series 12. Medical reference files, 1927-1985, with reprints and articles, in Series 13, include material on unusual medical cases and Wood's research on Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Series 14 contains biographical information, 1924-1988, on Wood's colleagues, particularly Alfred N. Richards and Charles C. Wolferth.
